Relating Structural and Functional Connectivity to Performance in a Communication Task
نویسندگان
چکیده
Measures from event-related functional MRI, diffusion tensor imaging tractography and cognitive performance in a language-based task were used to test the hypothesis that both functional and structural connectivity provide independent and complementary information that aids in the identification of network components most related to the neurobiological basis for language and cognitive processing. Structural connectivity was measured by averaging fractional anisotropy (FA) over a geometric fiber bundle model that projects local white matter properties onto a centerline. In the uncinate fasciculus FA was found to predict performance on a measure of decision-making regarding homonym meaning. Functional synchronization of BOLD fMRI signals between frontal and temporal regions connected by the uncinate fasciculus was also found to predict the performance measure. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that combining equidimensional measures of functional and structural connectivity identified the network components that most significantly predict performance.

Evaluation of Model-Based Methods in Estimating Dynamic Functional Connectivity of Brain Regions
Today, neuroscientists are interested in discovering human brain functions through brain networks. In this regard, the evaluation of dynamic changes in functional connectivity of the brain regions by using functional magnetic resonance imaging data has attracted their attention. In this paper, we focus on two model-based approaches, called the exponential weighted moving average model and the d...
متن کاملUrban neighborhood regeneration; Interpretive structural modeling of the factors affecting connected public spaces
Urban planning has emphasized quicker, lighter, and cheaper methods in recent years. According to urban studies, urban public spaces are valuable factors for urban neighborhood regeneration. Although, the concept of the network (connectivity in public spaces) is not new, and various authors and researchers had applied and adapted it to different areas of urban planning, it would be a new approa...
متن کاملBrain Functional Connectivity Changes During Learning of Time Discrimination
The human brain is a complex system consist of connected nerve cells that adapts with and learn from the environment by changing its regional activities. Synchrony between these regional activities called functional network changes during the life, and with learning of new skills. Time perception and interval discrimination are among the most necessary skills for the human being to perceive mot...
متن کاملHealthy aging by staying selectively connected: a mini-review.
Cognitive neuroscience of the healthy aging human brain has thus far addressed age-related changes of local functional and structural properties of gray and white matter and their association with declining or preserved cognitive functions. In addition to these localized changes, recent neuroimaging research has attributed an important role to neural networks with a stronger focus on interactin...
متن کاملInvestigating the functional communication network in patients with knee osteoarthritis using graph-based statistical models
Introduction: Osteoarthritis of the knee is the most prevalent type of arthritis that causes persistent pain and reduces the quality of life. However, no treatment alleviates symptoms or stops the disease from progressing. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies can provide information on neural mechanisms of pain by assessing correlation patterns among the different regions of the...
